5 scriptwriting devices to optimise engagement for learning-first content

Optimising engagement for learning-first content is one of the key objectives of the scriptwriting stage.  So how we can achieve this?

While it’s not an exact science, there are a number of tricks we can draw on. Here are 5 scriptwriting devices we can use to make learning videos engaging, as well as educational:

1. Mix up the mediums

Lengthy scenes in one setting can feel monotonous – but finding ways to mix up the mediums can help to create a sense of movement and energy. Short scenes that cut between different mediums – e.g. on location, in a studio, an interview setting – help maintain interest and engagement.

2. Include relatable scenarios and characters

Including scenarios and characters that the audience can relate to provides them with points of connection and a chance to ‘see themselves’ in the content, thereby supporting emotional engagement.

3. Utilise animations, transitions and other post-production tools

Animation flourishes can support the overall meaning or simply add visual interest. Graphics could include the use of emojis, text or other visual elements. Transitions might include dissolves, wipes and fades. Other tools include montage or time-lapses which can be useful for conveying a lot of information in a short space of time.

4. Include humour

Whether by adding funny facial reactions, scenarios or character quirks, using appropriate humour can inject fun into scripts.

5. Incorporate visual aids to support meaning

In learning-first content, using visual representations such as props, stock photos, footage or graphics can be a great way to support the meaning of target language.
