How we create beautiful children’s media with Carousel
We recently launched Carousel, a smarter way for educational and children’s brands to produce beautiful visual content at scale. But you may be wondering – how exactly does it work?
In this blog, we’ll be explaining how our efficient studio-based approach can elevate your children’s media content and make it stand out above the noise.
Let’s start with a few basics about video production.
Video production and its relationship to cost and the final outcome.
Making video content requires certain skills and resources: a place or places to film, camera equipment, a videographer, lighting equipment, lighting operators, sound mixers, actors etc. Obviously, these all come at a cost.
There will also be a timeframe and budget within which the production must be completed. Any extra time requirements will incur the extra cost of actors, location and crew etc.
Production requirements of location shoots vs studio shoots.
Videos can either be shot ‘on location’ – that is in a real-world setting such as a real school, house or park – or in a studio.
Shooting on location offers benefits such as a natural setting and authenticity. However it also introduces a number of additional variables and costs.
For example, when you shoot on location, factors such as lighting are more difficult to control. This may require extra time to accommodate for such as sending a lighting crew in advance of the shoot to scope out technical requirements specific to the location, or specific lighting setups. It also means less control over the visual aesthetic compared to a studio-based production as lighting can have a huge impact on the visual quality, tone and feel of video content.
Furthermore, location shoots are more vulnerable to other uncontrollable factors, such as the weather and sound interruptions, which can all cause delays to timelines.
Moving between locations too takes time which then eats away at time available for actual filming. Permits and access requests might also need to be negotiated.
A studio-based production approach has a number of advantages - hence why we’ve launched Carousel
With Carousel, our studio-based production approach, we use one studio space we are already familiar with, meaning we can potentially reduce the time spent on production tasks such as lighting set up and more easily achieve high quality production values, such as the rich cinematic aesthetic you can see in our promotional videos.
Additionally, with Carousel we can create many worlds in one studio space – from a home environment such as a living room or child’s bedroom to a classroom – reducing the need for time spent travelling between locations.
Here are some of the other benefits of Carousel:
Child-friendly production needs: Working with children means short filming windows and the need for safe, contained spaces. A controlled studio environment reduces stress for both children, their chaperones and crew. It also means we can get through an optimum amount of content
Scheduling headaches: Clients often struggle with coordinating multiple locations, child performers, and production teams. Your studio eliminates the risk of last-minute cancellations, weather delays, or venue restrictions.
Creative consistency: When projects require multiple shoots over time, re-dressing the same set ensures visual continuity without worrying about real-world changes (seasons, décor, availability of a location).
Global-looking content, locally: Clients often need sets that “feel” like they could be anywhere in the world. Your studio can dress to look international, saving brands the cost of overseas shoots.
Sustainability pressure: Many clients now need to evidence their green credentials. By reducing travel and repurposing sets, you directly help them meet sustainability goals and your own.
Content volume demands: With the rise of TikTok, YouTube, and multi-channel campaigns, brands need lots of content quickly. Having pre-made, flexible sets makes batch-shooting efficient and cost-effective.
Control over rights and permissions: Filming in real homes or public spaces can mean paperwork, noise complaints, or restrictions. In your own studio, clients avoid these barriers.
Creative experimentation: By providing modular sets and green screen, you make it possible to test different creative approaches on the fly without expensive resets.
Cross-media flexibility: A shoot in your space can cover film, stills, podcast, and behind-the-scenes content in one session, maximising ROI.
Furthermore, as a team of creatives and filmmakers, we have a deep respect for the craft of filmmaking. We believe that children deserve content crafted predominantly by humans rather than AI.
So whether you’re an educational brand looking to produce learning-first video or a children’s toy or lifestyle brand looking to create high quality promotional videos, do get in touch with our team and we’d be happy to talk you through it, as well as discuss how we can craft scripts suitable for shooting at our studio.
